10 Days in Vietnam: How to Choose a Route That Fits
Ten days is enough for a rewarding introduction to Vietnam. The harder decision is how much movement you want. Before booking hotels, decide whether you would enjoy several different places or more time getting to know fewer ones.
The routes below are our planning suggestions, not fixed tours. Arrival and departure days count toward your ten days, and transfer days need space of their own.
Option one: three city bases
A Hanoi–Hoi An–Ho Chi Minh City route offers a north-to-south introduction. Vietnam Tourism's own highlights itinerary also links these destinations, using Da Nang as the airport connection for Hoi An. Its version includes additional stops; the outline here deliberately keeps fewer bases. Source: Vietnam Tourism's Vietnam Highlights.
Our suggested split:
- Days 1–3: Hanoi. Use arrival day to settle in, then choose a mix of guided exploration and independent time.
- Day 4: transfer to Hoi An. Plan the flight and onward road journey together. Keep the evening flexible.
- Days 5–6: Hoi An. Allow one day for the town and another for a chosen experience or a slower day.
- Day 7: transfer to Ho Chi Minh City. Include the trip back to the airport in your plan.
- Days 8–9: Ho Chi Minh City. Pick activities around your interests instead of trying to visit every landmark.
- Day 10: departure. Protect the time needed for checkout and the airport journey.
This option suits travelers who value variety and accept two domestic travel days. Check flight schedules and prices before committing to the outline.
Option two: fewer bases, more breathing room
If frequent packing sounds tiring, use the same ten days for one region or two bases. Put the nights you save into longer stays, a rest day, or an experience you would otherwise rush.
A useful test: would you rather add another destination, or have a second morning in a place you already like? There is no wrong answer, but your route should reflect it.
Build the trip in the right order
- Confirm your international arrival and departure points.
- Choose the experiences you care about most.
- Check the journeys between your proposed bases.
- Choose accommodation locations that support those plans.
- Add guided outings and leave some time unbooked.
Avoid treating flight duration as the whole transfer. Packing, checkout, airport travel, formalities, baggage, and the onward journey all use time.
