10 Things to Avoid in Vietnam: Don't Be That Tourist
Vietnam is welcoming, but we have our rules. Here's how to show respect and have a smoother trip.
Cultural Don'ts 🚫
1. Don't Lose Your Temper
Why: "Saving face" is huge here. Yelling or getting angry makes you look weak and rude. Do: Smile. Stay calm. You'll get what you want faster.
2. Don't Touch People's Heads
Why: The head is sacred. Do: Never pat a child on the head. Just wave instead.
3. Don't Wear Revealing Clothes at Temples
Why: It's disrespectful to the gods and locals. Do: Cover your shoulders and knees. Carry a sarong just in case.
4. Don't Display Affection Publicly
Why: We're conservative about PDA. Do: Holding hands is fine. Save the kissing for the hotel.
Practical Don'ts 🚫
5. Don't Drink Tap Water
Why: It's not safe. Do: Bottled water only. Brush teeth with bottled water if you have a sensitive stomach.
6. Don't Ignore Traffic Rules
Why: It looks chaotic, but there is a flow. Do: Walk steadily. Don't stop suddenly in the middle of the road.
7. Don't Give Money to Child Beggars
Why: It keeps them out of school and on the streets. Do: Donate to reputable charities instead.
8. Don't Take Photos Without Asking
Why: It's rude, especially with ethnic minority tribes. Do: Smile, point to your camera, and ask. 90% of the time they'll say yes!
Social Don'ts 🚫
9. Don't Refuse Food Rudely
Why: Offering food is friendship. Do: Try a little bit. If you can't, apologize and explain politely.
10. Don't Expect Everyone to Speak English
Why: It's not our first language! Do: Learn "Xin Chào" (Hello) and "Cảm Ơn" (Thank you). It goes a long way.
